great value January 8, 2009 I'm very satisfied with the sound and performance qaulity.great value for a denon product 350.00 amazon price.remote is unnecessarily complicated but I purchased an all-in-one harmon remote and I hardly use the original remote anyway.
Great Price Great Item!! January 8, 2009 I purchased this Receiver in early December and have now played with it for over 1 month. It is my 1st higher grade receiver and the beginning to my home theatre. Again being my 1st receiver and reading the reviews I was scared to death about the install. But after reading the manual a bit, and going through the on screen instructions I was amazed by the options. I am very happy I took the chance, I have now purchased Klipsch C-3 center, F-3 floorstanding, Sub 10, and ss.5 surounds and can't wait to hear this crank!
Great receiver for bargan price January 7, 2009 I was debating between buying last years model AVR-888 vs. going with this year's model (AVR-889). The main difference is 4 HDMI inputs on the new one vs. 2 on the old. For half the price, I don't miss the inputs at all and got Amazon's half-price deal on the OPPO HM-31 Certified HDMI 1.3 and 1080p Switch in case I do need more HDMI inputs in the future.
I'm not an audio expert, but the sound of this unit is excellent to my ears and set-up was a breeze. I mainly bought this receiver to handle my ever-increasing video needs. My current older model 64" TV (Pioneer Elite) is pre- HDMI, so I have all my video now converted to component by this receiver and sent to the TV. Picture quality is excellent. The video processor in this unit does a superb job in up scaling any video to component and I see no artifacts. In addition to a HD-DVR (using its component out, optical for audio), I have a PS3 (component out for video, HDMI cable for audio), DVD Recorder/Player (component out, S-video in), S-VHS Tape Recorder/Player (S-video in/out), and 5-disc CD player all connected to the receiver.
It's now so simple to switch between equipment. The receiver has a source-select knob that you turn to select the video/audio combo input you want. You can label the display to something useful. I set it up so the display reads PS3 when I select my PS3 as the source. It is set up to pass through the component video and amplify the audio portion of the HDMI input. Now that is flexible!
In summary, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and would buy it again without hesitation. I'm also a convert into buying last year's model A/V equipment for half the price of the current model year. You can upgrade twice as often if you want.
A great receiver for the price, not sure where others' problems come from January 5, 2009 Well, I was a bit nervous after reading a lot of the bad reviews of this receiver on Amazon. Customers' problems seemed to range from not understanding the manual at all, not being able to get the rear surround speakers working, and having problems with Denon customer service. First, I went to Denon's site and downloaded a PDF of the manual. Honestly, I'm not a computer programmer or anything like that but I really didn't understand where all the confusion was coming from. Yes, it is a complex receiver, but if you want a cheap, plug-it-in-and-turn-it-on receiver then buy one of those surround systems in a box and your done. I even understood why it was only putting out 5.1 and not 7.1 from looking right at the PDF manual without yet having the unit in my hands (look on page 30 where it says "define how the amplifier for the surround back speaker channels is used."). So I decided to get it...and am I glad I didn't take heed of the negative reviews. It is a great receiver. Some folks here complained about how the volume was read in -db (so when you turned up the volume the digits decreased closer to ONE (+1) db. EVERY receiver I have ever owned has read the volume this way (a Yamaha and a Sony). Deal with it. The one annoying aspect of the unit is its remote control. Most of the operating functions are located on the front of the control, but there are more set up buttons on the bottom of the remote in a flip open compartment. A little annoying at first, but many of these buttons are used for entering menus and setting the unit up. Not to mention that you are probably going to buy a universal remote to handle all your devices any way (if you're not, and you're happy using 3 or 4 remotes, good for you) and you'll end up putting the Denon remote away.
Overall, I have no problems with this unit, the manual didn't confuse me (so maybe I should apply for that rocket scientist position) and I had everything set up and was watching Blu-ray's with full surround sound in no time. So if you understand how high end receivers function, don't be scared off by the reviews from users who prefer a Fisher Price brand receiver.
AMAZING!! December 22, 2008 I just do not think there is anything better for this price. It sounds amazing, setup is a breeze, and the HDMI upconversion works like it should. I have not had a single problem with this unit.
Thank you Amazon!!
