4 out of 5 stars Really Nice Receiver   January 5, 2009
I have found very few Sony products that I like or even tolerate. This receiver, however, may have changed my mind about Sony. I needed a receiver that gave me nice 7.1 performance, HDMI audio, and a good price. Sony gave it to me with the DG720. For $250, it pushes hard, sounds clean, and has a nice feature set. I'm really happy with this purchase.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing product   January 4, 2009
I bought this receiver and after two weeks of use it went haywire. It stopped sending the video signal to my new samsung 50" plasma tv, and the sound went out too. The picture would come in for a half a second, and then go out for three seconds. When I bypassed the receiver and went right from the cable box to my tv, the signal and tv worked fine. For the two weeks it did work the sound was just ok, I would say it was less 'full' than my 5 yr old yamaha that it replaced (I wanted to go all hdmi so I bought the new receiver). It just sounded a little hollow. If it hadn't broken I wouldn't have replaced it due to the sound, but it didn't sound as good as I had hoped. I mailed it back to Amazon yesterday and I have already purchased a Yamaha 663 on another web retailer as it was $110 less than on Amazon. Now I have to spend all that time hooking everything up again!
Other issue I ran into was whenever I watched a blu ray movie on my new PS3 I couldn't adjust the sound settings on the receiver, the PS3 just took over. I didn't know that would happen. (I'm not a real audiophile, not an expert on this stuff)

4 out of 5 stars PS3's Perfect Mate   January 3, 2009

I discovered that I needed a new receiver when I got my PS3 and found to my dismay that the audio output via optical wasn't compatible with my approximately five year old Sony receiver. I was seriously considering buying an Onkyo, but I read some of the reviews that said the PS3's Blu Ray playback requires HDMI for surround sound, and this is one of the most affordable HDMI receivers; it is not pass-through, but has full audio support.

I like this receiver because it just plain works. You don't have to spend hours configuring it, either. It comes with a microphone that is used during an automated setup, and it does a pretty good job adjusting the output levels to the speakers.

All in all, I would rate this a 4 out of 5 stars. It's a solid unit with good features. The only downsides are:

1) The IR remote control is has to be aimed fairly precisely at the unit. I use a Logitech Harmony One, which is great, but sometimes the receiver misses a command that I've pushed.

2) The HDMI switching works well, but the delay when switching from from an SD to HD source (and vice versa) is a tad long.

The upsides are:

1) It just plain works with the PS3 and a 1080p HDTV. You don't have to scour the Internet to figure out how to make it do what it's supposed to do.

2) It sounds great...albeit to a non-audiophile.

3) It has HDMI switching with 3 inputs.

4) It looks cool.

4 out of 5 stars But can you connect a turntable?   December 24, 2008

For the benefit of other greybeards like myself who may still want to be able to play their old vinyl, I should like to add that of the STR-DG520, STR-DG720, STR-DG820 and STR-DG920, only the last-named has a phono input!

5 out of 5 stars Great price, awesome product   December 21, 2008

I have really enjoyed this product. It is my first real receiver. I have always had a HTIB but I needed several HDMI ports for my new set up. This receiver has done exactly what I needed. I paired it with a set of Boston Acoustics Horizon Series MCS100MDNT 5.1-Channel Speaker System (Black) that were on sale during one of amazons todays specials and the sound is great.

You have the ability to label the inputs so if you want to name the devices instead of seeing HDMI 1 or Video 1 you can. This really helped the younger ones figure out how to work it. Very user friendly. They just rotate the knob through the different input ports until they find the one that says Wii.

To try to help other amateurs like myself I do want to throw this in. The subwoofer port is for a powered subwoofer with a single jack input. My HTIB subwoofer had a double red and black input jack. They are not compatible. You have to purchase a powered subwoofer separately or purchase a set of speakers with a powered subwoofer included. This in by no means a fault of the receiver, it is just not something I knew and caused me some headache.

I can't think of any negatives at the moment. Well, maybe one. The system is a Sony so of course the remote only wants to control other Sony devices. I don't think there is a way for it to be a "universal remote" to turn the TV on and off. Even my cheap DVD player can do that.

I am a huge proponent of the cheap HDMI cables from Amazon. HDMI Cable 2M (6 Feet)
That is all I have ever used and I have never had any problems. They work with everything and I have seen no reason to buy expensive/overpriced cables.
